For fun I kayak, hike, read, kiteboard, go to the gym, and do yoga.

More About My Marketing Experience

I used to run a small business. It was a service-based business.

When I started my small offline business I had hardly any customers (because I was just starting out) and I didn’t have much money to pay for marketing.  I had never built a website or published an article online; my sole Internet experience was having an e-mail account and surfing the Web.

I was desperate for customers.  I started reading voraciously about Internet marketing for small businesses.  I rolled up my sleeves and decided to learn how I could leverage the Internet to build my business. I’m extremely pleased to say that it worked very well.  Hundreds of nights and weekends later, I built up my business and then attracted a large buyer.  All of that success I attribute to the internet.

In the process I made many mistakes (and will make many more), but when something worked, I duplicated that process over and over.  I threw money away on garbage software and informational products.  But, I also bought some gems that paid for themselves 100-fold.

The Internet gives small businesses the chance to compete with any other business out there. Moreover, if you’re prepared to do it yourself, it costs very little and can be very effective.

In fact, I believe as a small business owner that it’s a very good idea to know how to do Internet marketing for your business, so if and when you hire services to help or take over your small business marketing campaigns you’ll be able to know who to hire and how to monitor results.

I decided to take what I’ve learned and write about it online. I love the fact that with some know-how and effort, any small business can build a huge Web presence in a short time. When done well, Online marketing can yield huge results. It’s a way to completely leverage your time and money.

Gone are the days when it took months to roll out a great marketing campaign. I’m talking about print marketing – Yellow Pages, billboards, flyers, direct mail, radio spots, etc. With the Internet, if you take charge of your marketing, you can roll out campaigns in days or even hours. Whenever I get a new idea of a service to offer my customers (or a new way of informing them), I’m in a great position to build a site around it, add it to my existing sites, and/or send out e-mails to my client list. I can do all this in one day.

Focusing my small business marketing efforts on the Internet enables me to build upon my campaigns. All the content and materials I put “out there” on the Web stay there and continue working for my business 24/7 indefinitely. I don’t need to pay money every month or year to keep my campaigns alive.

And so I’m very excited to take what all the small business marketing ideas I’ve learned and use and sharing it with you on this site.

The information on this site is what I’ve done in real-life for a real business.  It is not regurgitated info from other marketing sites.  This is what worked for me; it’s the real deal – marketing in-practice.

About the Small Business I sold

My customers were locally-based.  I didn’t serve a global market.  I served a local market.  My target market population was about 400,000 people.  But only a fraction of that number required my services.  My entire marketing strategy was reaching out to the small group of people within that 400,000 population that needed my services.  But with the Internet and communication technology, I’m was able to expand my target population – which I did by opening a satellite office.

My main office wass in a town of 130,000 people.  I also had a satellite office in a city of 200,000 people.  My two offices straddled another town – which made my target area about 3 to 5 surrounding towns.

I credit the Internet with building my small business.  Along the way I’ve learned a ton about small business marketing online – and doing so on tight or non-existent budgets.

Now I do what I did for my small businesses for other business owners.  Primarily, I build sites promoting their business.  I get paid only when I deliver tangible results.

I also publish this website which is a passion of mine.  It’s where I share what I’ve done and am doing.
