Some people want a WordPress theme already designed and ready to go out-of-the-box. Other people want to design their own website in WordPress, even if they don’t know much coding. Moreover, most people who tweak and design a WordPress theme wants to do it fast.

If you can’t find the perfect WordPress theme and want control over your WordPress theme design, then you should check out Headway Themes.  Headway Themes is what I call a WordPress website builder. It doesn’t come with a design. Instead, you design your website WITHOUT KNOWING ANY CODE.

I purchased a license and went to work with this theme.

How long did it take me to get a decent understanding of this theme?

After 1.5 hours I had a solid understanding how it worked.  I watched 2 Headway video tutorials and then went to work.  By lunch I had created several layouts and designs.  You can easily build a decent-looking, fully customized website with Headway in a day.

The concept of a WordPress website builder is relatively new. Headway Themes is jumping into the builder concept with both feet and has delivered something powerful if designing and building a WordPress theme is your preference.

Headway Themes Features

Layout and Design Generally	What I really like about Headway Themes is that you don’t assign a layout to a post or page in the post/page editors.  Instead, you design and create your layouts of each post/page in the Headway Themes editor.
Drag and Drop Technology	You build website sections, called blocks, in the Headway Themes visual editor.  You simply use your mouse to draw blogs and then choose which kind of block you want it to be (content, widget, footer, header, menu, etc.).  Your pages and posts are literally a website design canvass.
Create Unlimited Widgets ANYWHERE	Widgets are no longer resigned to the sidebar.  With Headway you can create different widget zones on different pages/posts anywhere on the page or post.
Unlimited Menus ANYWHERE	You aren’t restricted to one or two menus.  You can create an unlimited number of horizontal and vertical menus and place them anywhere on any page/post.
Custom Headers on ANY Page or Post	You can create a custom header on any page or post without having to know any code.  Each page and post can have a different header if you like.
Unlimited Columns	You can create a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 15 column web page if you like.  Moreover, the number of columns can vary from post to post and page to page.
Create Widget-Zone Based Home Page	If you don’t want your posts to appear on your home page, you can create a home page comprised entirely of widget zones that are dedicated only to the home page.
Widget-Based Footer	You can easily create a single or multi-widget zone footer … and select on which web pages the widget-based footer appears.
Website Design	You can completely customize and build your website design without knowing a line of code. Even if you do know how to code, this is a fast way to build websites in WordPress.  Pretty much ever design element for each page/post is controlled with drop-down menus and input fields.
Customized Website Layout	This is huge. Most themes limit you with Website layout. Headway Themes enables you to customize your layout from the ground up.
SEO Control	The Headway Themes WordPress website builder gives you full control on configuring your SEO. You can specify meta titles, meta descriptions, nofollow and noindex control. Plus the SEO in Headway themes integrates with All In One SEO plugin. If you’re a web developer, you can easily show clients how they can do their on-site SEO which will increase the value you provide clients. You can see how your post/page search engines appear in the search engines in the add post/add page panels (very handy).
Support	You get access to a support forum moderated by Headway Themes support staff. Headway Themes also offers e-mail support.
Pricing (as of the time this was published)	2 Pricing Packages: Base: $68 – Support and updates 1 year. Unlimited use and installations for life. Standard: $174 – Includes 3 pre-designed Headway child themes. All-Access:  $378 – unlimited child themes and developer webinars.
Refund	Yes. You must ask for a refund within 30 days.

A few things about Headway Themes to note

Yes, it’s a WordPress website builder. However, you don’t install it on an existing theme. Headway themes is a stand-alone theme.

Website Designers and Developers can use Headway themes for client websites. In fact, having a license of this theme builder is an excellent tool to have for quickly building customized WordPress themes for clients.

Headway Themes Review Pros

• Truly drag and drop technology.
• Control layouts and design of all pages and posts within the Headway visual editor (very convenient).
• Full design and style control without knowing CSS.
• Very reasonably priced (I bought the Base license for $68).
• Create different layouts for different pages and posts (a feature you may very well want once your site is up and running).
• Integrates beautifully with the Widget dashboard and WordPress’ custom menus for creating unlimited widget zones and menus.
• Attention-to-detail – the design options go into a great deal of detail so that you can create stunning designs just the way you want them.
• Easy-to-use:  I had a solid understanding of how to build layouts and design pages/posts in about 1.5 hours.
• Excellent and easy-to-use SEO configuration option.  I don’t always recommend the built-in SEO panel for all themes; however, in this case I do.

Headway Themes Review Cons

This Headway Themes review would be lacking if I didn’t list what I don’t like.  My criticisms are:

• The visual editor is too dark.  A lighter/brighter editor would be nicer to use.
• Sometimes it takes a little while to load templates and grids.  I’m not a patient person.
• Pricing: The Base price is great.  The extra cost for child themes isn’t so cool.  I think a lower all-in-one price is warranted (even if the base price was increased).
• A few times the blocks were stuck in the grid.  Eventually they moved to where I intended, but it was a little annoying.  It could have been a PC performance issue on my end.
