Not sure how to choose and buy WordPress themes? Check out, what are in my view, the pros and cons to using WordPress.
WordPress Pros
- Very easy and fast to set up.
- Very easy and fast to and add content.
- Is a blogging platform, but you can create excellent static websites with a blog built-in it. All theme vendors listed above offer “static” website options.
- Free – the WordPress platform is free. But you need to buy WordPress themes (if you want a premium theme) and a hosting account (read my Bluehost review for information about a great host service). When you get your own hosting account with Bluehost, you can have as many websites with your account as you like.
- Many themes to choose from and buy (see the list above for premium WordPress theme vendors).
- The premium themes you can buy are very easy to customize. You can have a website up and running quickly. Moreover, premium themes typically come with very good forum support with a lot of information about customizing your theme.
- There’s a huge WordPress community (lots of users) so there are many free plugins you can use to improve the functionality of your website.
- When you buy WordPress themes from a boutique theme vendor (find out the difference between boutique and mall template vendors), you’re buying a template system that is generally very similar among most of the themes offered by that particular vendor.
WordPress Cons
- When you buy WordPress themes, you may be restricted you design and functionality if you’re not familiar with coding in WordPress.
- Generally you don’t get live chat or telephone support with WordPress theme vendors (exception: Template Monster).
- WordPress premium themes vary in ease-of-use. Be sure to check into a particular premium theme’s ease-of-customization – not all themes are equal in this regard.
What To Look Out For When You Buy WordPress Themes
- Customization ease: Is it through a panel (simply clicking buttons) or must you know CSS.
- Level of support: I like forums – which are widely offered. If no forum, then I expect ticket system support.
- License granted: Can you use the theme on more than one domain? If not, and you want to, how much more must you spend?
- Refunds: Are refunds available? Not all WordPress theme vendors offer refunds.
- Showcase Themes: Many premium WordPress theme providers offer samples of websites using their themes. If you like some of the “showcase” examples, be sure to understand how much coding knowledge is needed to achieve that custom design. It may not be as easy as you’d hoped.
- SEO Ready: This is a must. Ensure any premium WordPress theme is SEO ready. This means it’s easy to add meta tags to your website, pages, and posts.
- Use of Widgets: I love widgets and I love premium WordPress themes that offer plenty of widget options – especially on the home page.
- NoIndex / NoFollow options: Ensure the theme enables you to set individual pages and posts to NoIndex (out of the search engines) and NoIndex (links not indexed with search engines). This is an important search engine optimization option. For many strategic reasons, there may be pages and/or posts in your site you wish to keep out of the search engines and/or prevent links being indexed.
I can tell you from personal experience that choosing WordPress and buying a premium WordPress theme for your website and/or blog is a good decision. I use WordPress for many of my websites – including my business website. I get excellent traffic from the search engines, the site converts well, and I can add as much content as I like very quickly.
